Thomas Bernardet and Florent Mulot – 'Walker #3, Le Colisée, architecte Kisho Kurokawa, Nîmes, 2001' (15 min, France)
The Walker project is an ongoing series of video essays on different architectural or architectured sites. In each film, the two artists stroll through a building or landscape, taking turns filming with a single video camera. The Walker films are not fiction, nor are they documentary. TB and FM define them as performances meant to be filmed, cinematographical improvisations on a theme, like free jazz recorded in a studio, with multiple takes. Walker # 3 seems to have more to do with perception. It’s shot in a vacant lot of a housing development, somewhere in southern France. A fire has just devastated the site. Blackened tree-trunks ooze white gobs of sap. The ground is scorched and covered with ashes. Music by Labradford.

Reyner Banham loves Los Angeles (52 min, UK, 1972)
selected by Thibaut Espiau
Long before Los Angeles's contribution to modern culture became widely recognized, British architectural historian Reyner Banham proclaimed it one of the world's great cities.
The documentary 'Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles' takes the viewer on a tongue-in-cheek tour of the city's cultural landscape. An entertaining and thoughtful examination of a metropolis in motion, the film documents a city situated at the divide between the modern era's clean lines and faith in progress—as captured in the work of architectural photographer Julius Shulman—and what has been described as Banham's "Pop Art" view, with its sparkle-front houses, Tiki huts, and jarring juxtapositions.
Reyner Banham (1922-1988) was a prolific architectural critic and writer best known for his 1960 theoretical treatise "Theory and Design in the First Machine Age", and his 1971 book "Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies".

"Some performances" is a film with re-enactments of 54 performances from the 50's to 2000, revisited by Sara Manente, Ondine Cloez and Michiel Reynaert. The process of imitation is based upon some restrictions: less objects as possible, natural light, same background.
The re-enactments are edited following the chronological order of the original performances. The film is split in two so that the audience always sees two moments of the entire video.

"Mission failed"
mix media installation
This installation is inspired by a UFO, that appeared in one of the episodes of Star Trek: “The Voyage Home”. The object is an extraterrestrial spacecraft which broadcasts the songs of whales around the earth. In a technoid universe, a prototype sensor and sound transmitter are exposed, combining -more or less naive- conceptual art and science fiction. The first element is a small soundproof studio, which makes a real-time aquarium sound. The second element is a device developed as a sound board that transmits the recording of water.
The design of this machinery is based on a contemporary myth that sees the language of a whale as the most logical form of communication for an extraterrestrial dialog. In this fantasy about communicating with unknown entities, the sounds of distress expressed by the sculpture, are fragments of songs of whales, selected and processed in a certain way, as to deliver an SOS in a language accessible to them.

This project was developed during the 2004 Redefining Action event of Salzburg SZENE. Within this virtual ART government we sought out ways to displace curious actions within the domain of public society. As the Minister of Urban Society. I discussed with my cabinet (Bernd Maier, Lilia Mestre) the desire to reaffirm nakedness within a natural surrounding. One idea grew to another and a re-creation of the Manet painting was set upon. After reflecting upon the controversy of the original painting I chose two dance programmers to play the suits and two choreographers for the ingénues. As for the setting I replaced the painting’s original bathing hole with the cultivated pitch of the Salzburg football stadium. This was in fact the last event in the stadium as soon after it was torn down and made into a parking lot.

Length 12 min
I have become obsessed with the idea that once a hand rests in its relaxed state it becomes a living sculpture, a fingerprint. This carved shape is individually unique and formed by how we have lived, what we have touched, and what we have done with our lives. The musical score for the installation was initially intended to be cues for the written score I had created, but which developed into a compositional score to accompany the personal inhalations and exhalations of the many hands. This installation was created with the support of Paul Lemp and the Zurich multimedia academy in 2004.

Mieke Lambrigts presents a site-specific sound intervention, using the acoustic qualities found in the space as part of the composition. With hardly anything except for field recordings and sinus tones, she creates a subtle soundtrack that merges almost completely with the environmental sounds and the resonance of the room.
The interactive installation 'Transcriptions' of Kurt Du Tré focuses on the translation of ideas and concepts from one work or medium to another, using the artwork as an open source. Sketches made by Ilona Ruegg for her project 'Infobox' are used as a graphic score, interpreted by different musicians. Users can create with these individual improvisations new compositions.
